I've got an old Creative 8 bit card and I've installed it onto my non-coppermine Celeron 500 (overclocked to indicated 562 but maybe 600) with Hyundi pc100 128mb ram an internal pci modem and a geforce mx agp vid card, all on an Asus P2B motherboard using a ps/2 aopen optical mouse.
I've just installed the $2 card and the sound quality is really poor. But besides that I get a static noise in games like age of empires. Also the mouse pointer shoots off in any direction and scrolls to the edge of the screen whenever a large amount of activity begins (ie a war) but not after. The static is almost constant in games and that.
What can I do? I've fooled around with the bios since I got the thing, so I've reserved an IRQ for the particular ISA slot it's in, also I've switched on the DMA's 1 and 5 for it.
more than likely, your 8 bit card has seen the end of its days. Most games are looking for at least 16 bit soundcard to play good, as this has been the standard for over 4 years. I suggest that you start looking for a new card, since the Asus is an Intel chipset, any Creative product or Herculies product will do. Also look at the Philips cards, as a lot of poeple here seem to like them. If you are running Windows 98, you should have no problems.
