if you're looking for a single card, (Dual 7970's are faster), then performance wise, the 7990 is better. But at a cost. Its much hotter, louder, and even uses more power than its rated TDP. That thing drinks electricity.
For the sole reason of noise and temps, I would go for a good 690. Of course, you could go for dual 7970's, which would be more ideal.

overall GTX 690 is the winner.!
here's your answer
Power Consumption (Max TDP)
Radeon HD 7970 250 Watts
Geforce GTX 690 300 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (20%)
Memory Bandwidth
In theory, the Geforce GTX 690 will be 46% faster than the Radeon HD 7970 overall, because of its greater data rate. (explain)
Geforce GTX 690 384512 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7970 264000 MB/sec
Difference: 120512 (46%)
Texel Rate
The Geforce GTX 690 is much (more or less 98%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 7970. (explain)
Geforce GTX 690 234240 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7970 118400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 115840 (98%)
Pixel Rate
The Geforce GTX 690 will be quite a bit (more or less 98%) more effective at AA than the Radeon HD 7970, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)
Geforce GTX 690 58560 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7970 29600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 28960 (98%)

hah, you used hwcompare. all that site is good for is looking at physical specs and power usage. It will tell you
Spoiler
of a card's real world performance. if you don't actually know, don't reply. nothing

not only that but he compared to the wrong card...
edit yep 690 would be smarter choice, the devil is faster but with uncomfortable side effects.

Honestly they should ban anyone instantly for using hwcompare to compare two cards. I've seen some 'veterans' using it as well... its bad because it doesn't give proper performance comparisons, just theoretical performance. If you are using it just to compare actual STATS within a generation from the same designer (AMD or NVIDIA), then its fine. Just to convey the physical differences between the cards.

GTX690 is kind of dumb because it combines epic graphics processing with only 2GB of effective memory(it says 4, but it's 2x2 per card so it only sees 2GB), same with the 7990, 3GB effective memory(6/2=3).
The problem with dual cards is that the market for them is so small neither company is really inclined to care about them, and they put all their effort into high end single GPU cards(7970GHz/GTX680). Crossfiring 2 Radeon 7970GHz editions will beat both the Devil 13 and the GTX690 for the same or slightly over the Devil 13/GTX690's price.

Actually the HD7990 is slightly more capable. BUT take the GTX690 as SLI has much better support than Xfire.
False, CF has scaled better than SLI ever since the Radeon 5000/6000 days.

YES scaled better I agree. BUT scaling has nothing to do with game support and micro-stuttering.

Next to no microstuttering with a little tweaking. Plus, for dual GPU cards, game support really doesn't matter, it'll max them either way.

Link all you want from OLD data. A fact is a fact. I like AMD(have a HD7950 and before HD4870x2) but its just how it is, drivers change A LOT over time. And Nvidia does dual GPUs better from a stability and support standpoint.

Not even the ares II is better...
http://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/ARES_II/images/perfrel.g...
Look at the power consumption : http://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/ARES_II/images/power_pea...
http://tpucdn.com/reviews/ASUS/ARES_II/images/power_max...
And it's price point is $1599...
In my opinion, get the 690 gtx, nvidia proves to be better in the multi gpu department, with better driver support, lower power consumption, either if it's against the powercolor or the ares II.

the aresII review has a bunch of games where the new drivers dont really work with crossfire at all... that might change with driver updates and if you check the summary page 2 then the picture changes quite a lot performance wise. (you can fix non-functioning crossfire, but you cant really do anything about generally slower chip design)... Yeah the card uses electricity like there's no tomorrow and the price is outrageous but then again it is a 1000 piece novelty/collectors item, the average enthusiast isn't going to get one even if he wanted it. lol so all in all the 690 is more 'practical' solution
