I have been speaking to some of my industry contacts, and most of them seem to think we should have a major LAN party in the S.E. United States. Major, in that we'd like an entire hotel, and over 500 contestants. We have all the equipment and sponsors for a gigabit network, 12 dedicated multiprocessor game servers, door prizes, give aways, and of course competition prizes. These things range from mouse pads to complete servers ( we'll be giving one of ours away ) to cash.
We have a few questions regarding how to do it, however.
Our main concern is hacks and cheats. How do we keep these out of the party ? Our techs suggested only allowing our own machines for competition, but that raises some issues for people who prefer trackballs, or ergonomic keyboards, or joysticks, or want to run outrageous resolutions.. Besides, if you've spent hours practicing with your own personal setup, it would be unfair to ask you to change for competition.
How do we handle letting people bring their own machines in, but still maintain a fair playing field ?
