I have a ReplayTV 5160 that won't start up. It stays on the Please Wait
screen indefinitely. I've already tried holding the power button,
unplugging it, replugging it, many many times. After several days being
locked up with the "Please Wait..." screen, I just unplugged it.

Will I ever see my programs again? I was thinking I should just cancel
my subscription, and use the hard drive for my computer. Then trash my
RTV 5160. I really don't see an alternative :(

Have you tried leaving it on over night. That please wait once stayed on for
20 minutes before it went to the next screen on one of my units. You also
may need a new HD.

Don't throw out as the drive is probably the cause and can be easily
fixed.

Yes, you may need a new harddrive.
I have the same model and replaced mine with a Western Digital 7200rpm
160gig hard drive. Formated it with an image gotten off the internet.

First you need to make sure it isn't just locked up.
Press the power button for 20 seconds and let the unit turn off.
Unplug the power from the house current and continue to hold the power
button for another 20 seconds.

Now wait for a few minutes.
Plug it back in and give it plenty of time to boot back up.
It could take many minutes, up to 20 or 30 just to make sure.
If this does not get it to boot up then you will need to do a drive
replacment. Not a hard job but you need to have a computer's IDE
connector and a format program and an image of the drive off the
internent. I just used a rtv5040 image. It knows to make it 160gig.

The drive went bad, upgrade it. 5000 Replays are worth their weight in gold.
