hello i have faced an issue in deciding what graphics card i would need for my rig. i currently have:
amd phenom ii 965 black edition @3.4 ghz
msi 970a g46 atx mainboard
g.skill 8 gb 1x8gb @1866mhz
ati radeon hd 5450 1gb
thermaltake tr2 430watt psu
seagate 160gb sata 6
nzxt gamma classic gaming atx case
i have an external 24x dvd drive
and external 200gb hdd
i have windows 7 professional and dualbooting linux mint 14 cinnamon (wonderful ubuntu derivative)
basically my current graphics card is sufficeint for my uses ie:steam games such as tf2 cs:s portal garry's mod and half life 2 but i would like to be able to run these faster and on higher settings. i would also like to be able to run crysis2 sonic generations batman arkham city amazing spiderman and possibly skyrim on modest setings. please help me decide what gpu to get for these, bearing in mind my limit is 220$ and i only have a 430 watt power supply.

Best solution

Get the 650 ti, it will give better performance.
With 220$, though, you can upgrade the psu and card :

The antec neo was made by seasonic, the 7850 is the best card within 170$.

do you think this would be better than a superclocked 2gb 650ti? mostly for gaming but possibly rendering and video editing
Ps: i am a student with not much cash to throw around so im looking for power per dollar here, not the top option but the best for my money

The 7850 is still better, if you can spend a bit more there's the 660 gtx, which is better, but between a 650 ti vs 7850, the 7850 is better.

Well the 650 ti is a decent card, it will do for mid settings, it's up to you if you want to spend more for the 7850 or get the 650 ti.

I looked up your PSU and you should be able to run up to a GTX 660 on it, that being said this is the one i would recommend (based off your games listed gtx 660 would be the way to go for Physx) in your budget range: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Your PSU has 2 rails one 12v 18 amp and one 12v 17 amp... so you have 196w on one and 184w on the other - one will power your CPU and one for GPU... GTX 660 only uses 140w MAX.

Hi,

first off any of these Gtx 650 ti or radeon hd 7770 will need to be paired with at least 500 w PSU or you will be in BSOD land.
Since you current card is fine, you should stick with it until you have enough money for a new psu. That's my experience 2 cents
