  1. It sure is a good GPU but if you want to play modern games at max/ultra I'd suggest you go for a HD7950 for about $300. Or you can get a GTX660TI $250 or GTX 670$350.

If you want high(next to the max) then a HD6870 will do.

Here I am assuming that you have a full hd display.
  2. depends how much you pay for it. You can get a 2gb 7850 for well under $200. The extra VRAM is very useful if you want to run games with high texture detail and draw distance. The 1gb vram of the 6870 will see it chug in games like BF3 or skyrim if you run with high res textures.

no , just an 1280x720 monitor man
and I don't play a lot , so I'm not expecting ultra settings , just medium to high settings , would the HD 6870 be good for that ?

At that resolution, more than good enough, especially if you can get it at a good price.
However do note that world's best "bang for the buck" is Radeon HD7850 1gb for 150$ or 160$ (or equivalent) which is as good as HD6950.
Still, go for HD6870 if you can get a good deal.

If you don't upgrade To an higher resolution then you are set for atleast a year. Also you just want to play on medium/high settings so you don't have to worry about the graphics card.
