I just assembled a system from scratch, but the only thing that has me scratching my head is the fact that the system boots up normally, runs Win98 and all that, but the light for the floppy disk is always on. I have not had the time to try it out, but figured the answer is probably easy enough.
Also floppy drive cables have to be terminated at the drive. He might have his cable plugged in pin 1 to pin 1 but has the end meant for the drive plugged in the mobo.
In other words make sure the last connector on your ribbon cable has a small twist in it (I think it's a 3 conductor twist for pin reversal) plugged into the drive.
