GTX 470- graphics slowdown after playing games for a few minutes

I have a computer that used to play games great- I would have no lag issues on the right settings whatsoever. Now though, I am getting video card lag when I play any game for more than 5-10 minutes. I have tried-

-new drivers
-old drivers
-cleaning manually
-defragging my harddrive

None of these have seemed to do the trick.

  1. How hot is it getting? The card will throttle down if it gets too hot.
  2. Usually gets around 85-88 degrees Celsius in game, it idles at about 48.
  3. Is the game an online/multiplayer game? When the lag occurs what the gpu and cpu usages at? Also whats the make and model of the power supply?
  4. On any game, I get FPS lag. It is noticeable and comes in spikes.
My GPU and CPU usages are about the same consistently when playing not just when I get lag.
My power supply is a XION 700 watt.
  5. Hello... Internet Lag in multi-player games can also have the appearance pf FPS lag... Can you take off the Side/Top panel of your computer, to determine if it's a High temperature problem?
  6. hey,

First of all as bignastyid said, if the card is overheating it will throttle itself in order not to damage itself. However the gtx400 series ran hot, but I believe it throttles at a higher temperature than what you posted. Make sure you have good airflow, and clean your system of dust. You can also set up a custom fan profile if you wish to lower the temps.

If you encounter LAG and you are not sure if its due to your internet connection or if it is due to your hardware then I suggest you download Fraps. Fraps will tell you your fps rates.

    Hope this helps!
  7. I know for a fact it is a graphics issue. FPS goes down noticeably as shown with Fraps. I clean my system regularly.
  8. Hello... I have found Zotec cards not having properly installed heatsinks due to capacitors preventing contact with the GPU, solution was to file on the heatsink for clearance... other solutions, was to remove the side/top of the case for more outside air to help in cooling.
  9. This is an EVGA card. I just started getting this issue in the last two months or so.
