When joining a server, I look to see if there are any "good" squads with
good scores and a well-positioned SL to spawn on. Lacking that, I start my
own squad:

But I don't just hit "create squad" and leave it at that. I use "Custom
squad" and use a provocative name with good sales value. "Takeflags" works,
but use your imagination. Then click "Manage squad", hold your tab key down
to get the score screen, right-click to get a pointer, and select the squad
tab. Scroll to the bottom to get the list of "Unassigned" players, and
memorize 3-5 names that jump out at you. Don't memorize the whole name,
just something easy to hold in your head. Let go of tab and scroll down the
list of players and check the boxes on those you can remember and hit
Apply. Drop back to first person and head for an enemy flag. You should get
lots of ok's and no-way's. Whenever you get to cover, repeat the process
until you've got a full squad.

I will have a look at the classes of players in current squads and then make the
decision to join or create my own. Depending on the map (if it has tons of vehicles or
is a close infantry fight) I will decide on what support role to play, Eng, Medic, or
Support and join a squad that needs it. I'll join them for a few spawns and see if they
are sticking together, following orders, requesting orders etc.

If not, it's time to start your own and I agree, you have to give it a name. My default
name is "Veterans" since it should clue in the experienced players that the SL has half
a clue. I like that BF2 has the persistant rank system so that having 3 stripes myself
should show that I have experience. Other times you need to be specific in the squad
name, like BaseDfense as USMC will lose on Sharqi if you just let the MEC roll in and
take the TV Station and blow up all your assets.

We are all at the mercy of the team members tho, as sometimes you get lucky and find
yourself with a group of guys who know what to do. They stay together, spawn in the
squad leader, and follow orders. Other times you get n00bs who join squads for unknown
reasons, then wander off doing who knows what.

I think another important aspect of being an SL is on-the-job training.
Since I pick random people from the unassigned list, odds are that most
will be newbs who know little about the finer aspects of the game. So I try
to use VOIP to point those out. Like the support guy who fails to drop
bags. I tend to prefer defense, and set up between CP's right after one is
taken. I try to let my guys know that I'm setting up ambushes for them to
man, that we don't have to go hunting for people to frag; they'll come to
us. A lot of guys don't recognize the commanders' assets, so I'll head for
the enemy uncappable and point them out for my newbie spec ops. I'll let
them know what kits we need so at the next spawn we can get the right stuff
deployed. Commanders often fail to send supplies following a hard
engagement, so I'll call those in.

Yep, thats the thing with Bf2 - when it works - low lag good teamplay
and a co-operative enemy :) it works really well.

When it doesn't - well the results really are sub-optimal...
