Hello World,
I'm looking to upgrade my rig and I was hoping to get some help on deciding. I currently can get an Asus 7870 for ~214$ or an XFX 7970 for ~350$. My question is the performance difference worth 140$?

As per the sticky, here is my current status:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

USAGE: Gaming. Relatively demanding games such as Crysis 3, Far Cry 3, The Witcher 2, etc.

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: BFG GTX 285. 800w Corsair PSU

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS:
Mobo - Asus P8Z77-V LX
CPU - I5 3570k
Ram - 8 gigs

PARTS PREFERENCES: I prefer cards that run cooler and quieter, but in this case it's really only between Asus and XFX as they have the deals

OVERCLOCKING: Yes

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1080

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: The XFX card is Voltage Locked

ASUS HD7870-DC2-2GD5-V2 Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

XFX Radeon HD 7970 FX797ATDFC Video Card - 3GB, DDR5, 1x Dual-link DVI-I, 2x mini DisplayPort, 1x HDMI, DirectX 11, CrossFire Ready, HD4K Support

Thanks ahead of time

Yes, for the titles you listed (Crysis 3, FarCry 3) the more video power you have the better. From what I hear even a 7950 cant max out either game completely. While a 7870 can overclock to match a stock 7950, a 7950 with a good 3rd party cooler usually can overclock past a stock 7970ghz edition. With the voltage locked you'll be limited on your overclock, but I would still take it over a 7870. I run a 7950 and just ordered another for crossfire. I was on the fence about it but when they offered Crysis 3 and Bioshock 3 free I figured why not pull the trigger.

Thanks for the reply. After some more research and number crunching, I think you are right. I'll give the XFX 7970 a go.
