Cant get online after reformating my laptop

Hello,
When I connect my Vista laptop wireless to my router it says I am connected but wont let me online it says successfully connected to security enabled network but when I try to go online it says its an unidentified network (public network)
Access says Local only my sons says Local and internet. This happend when we reformated his laptop some time ago but I cant remember how I resovled the problem I know I found the answer online but cant think where I think its probably a config problem but I cant find my way around vista I hate it,any help please
