What exactly are you trying to do with this machine?

What graphics card did you try? With only a 250W power supply, you would have a hard time even getting many basic graphics cards to work. Most graphics cards require a 350-450W power supply minimum and if you are using anything near the low end of that range then you better have a good quality supply.

I tried a radeon hd 5450 2GB graphic card and my computer wouldnt even recognize a graphics card was in it. the weird thing is, my mothers computer has a 350 watt power supply and it worked in hers and she has a pentium d 2.8ghz dual core processor. so i tried hooking up her power supply to my computer and it STILL didnt work. i even installed the drivers for the card before installing it in my computer. im wanting a new card because my onboard card is going on the fritz to the point where i can hardly do anything without it crashing. ive updated the drivers for my onboard graphics and that doesnt help. ive even set my computer for best performance and that doesnt really help either without me getting the message of: DISPLAY DRIVER HAS STOPPED RESOPONDING AND HAS RECOVERED. it's getting really irritating!!!

Can you give more system specs for both your computer and your mother's computer?

IE RAM, motherboard, and OS or if they're OEM systems, give us their model numbers?

Apparently that model only comes with Celeron D 3.3ghz.

Ram: 512MB DDR2. that's not going to cut it.
Chipset: ATI X1100 express. I can't even find it.
OS: Vista by default.

Why don't you just get a better computer? It might be a better investment. And BTW, don't spend extra money on a 2GB 5450 if it's going to perform the same as a 512MB 5450. The HD 5450 is about as low end as it gets.

"hers is a dell dimension e 510 with the pentium d 2.8ghz dual core processor with 1gb ram and either a 300 or 350 watt psu.

mine is a compaq sr2150nx with a pentium D 3.40 ghz dual core processor (which is an upgrade from the celeron D) and has 2gb of ram, 250 watt psu, windows vista home basic 32 bit operating system, a pci-e x16 slot. and the sticker on the side of the case says Product #RR790AA and the s/n is CNH6501NG2"

Oh thanks, I missed that.

But the OP still needs to elaborate on the type of RAM.

I had a Dimension E510 and it only supports DDR2. The second machine is assuredly DDR2 as well because they didn't really still use DDR in new desktops when the 3.4GHz Pentium Ds were around. They were out around the halfway point from DDR2 to DDR3 IIRC, but meh- memory generation shouldn't have anything to do with graphics card compatibility.

Maybe it was a PCIe 2.1 Radeon 5450 and it didn't work with the PCIe slot in OP's system. PCIe 2.1 versions of the Radeon 5000 and 6000 generation of graphics cards are known to have compatibility problems in many older motherboards due to having issues with some old types of PCIe slots.

here is my type of ram i put in my computer

Part Number: CT650136
Module Size: 2GB kit (1GBx2)
Package: 240-pin DIMM
Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300
Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 •

i bought it from crucial

So yeah, the only reason i want a new vid card is so that the annoying message of DISPLAY DRIVER STOPPED RESPONDING AND HAS RECOVERED display driver ATIKMDAG.sys has stopped resoponding, will go away. plus videos are really choppy.

also, they are saying in different forums that 2.1 slot and 2.0 slot are backwards compatible. dont know if that helps and i dont know which version my slot is. on my motherboard next to the slot all it says is pci express x16

PCIe 2.1 is supposed to be backwards compatible, but it has some bugs that are not present in PCIe 2.0 and 3.0 graphics cards that cause it to have issues with some early PCIe slots from old motherboards.

EDIT: Many old motherboards with early versiosn of PCIe don't state the version. It's not as common for early versions of an interface to have their version number be stated except in their specifications manual and/or website as it is for the later versions such as PCIe 2.0 and 3.0 slots in motherboards (mobo companies tend to advertise that they don't have the old versions of interfaces).

That means that that card, unlike this 5450, was probably not a PCIe 2.1 card.

no solution but a question. I have a 2150 desktop. I UPGRADED from single processor
3.4 to dual 3.4 and my system is now 1/2 as fast. Can't add ram............
have 2 gigs now

i assume it can handle vista 64 bit as i have a vista basic 32 .............
will going from my 32 bit to 64 bit [now that i have a dual core] gain me much more speed??

what processor did you put in? is it a pentium 4 or a pentium D? Im running Windows basic 32 bit with windows service pack 2, an Intel Pentium D 945 3.4Ghz/4M/800/05A SL9QQ LGA Socket 775 CPU Processor, and 2 gigs of ram (which is the highest amount of ram it will take with the 32 bit system) and an ASUS 210 SILENT 1GB DDR3 graphics card and my system flies for how old it is. I am under the assumption you should be able to add more ram with the 64 bit system. You can find the graphics card at bestbuy.com which helped tremendously. it wont run full 1080 HD but it sure sped up my system quite a bit.
