Hello all, I have a xfx hd 6870 currently in my pc. I got my hands on gigabyte hd 6850 for really cheap. I have been told before that I can run crossfire with both these cards but my 6870 will be down clocked to a 6850 Is This possible to crossfire these two cards?? What would I gain by doing so?

One other question I have to ask what is the performance difference between running at 16x vs 8x

No, It should work, just the 6870 will run at 6850 speeds, so I would get a 6850. And there is little difference between x16 and x8. You could probably run at x4 with MAYBE 4fps drop, the eyes don't notice something like that.

Again, it will work, just at the speed of a 6850. The reason why that one guy said no is he's probably used to nvidia sli, where you have to have the same card.

sorry really sorry for giving the wrong information.

yes you can.. Cards just have to be the same #X## (100's and 1000's obviously also) series to be able to X-fire ... a 6950 will x-fire with a 6990 ... but a 6970 will not X-fire with a 6870.

again sorry :(

no problem thanks for the help everyone. I just used my amd driver to overclock the 6850 to match the 6870. Works AWESOME!!! I get 50-60fps in every game I have tried so far.
