Intel series 4 display adapter: optimum settings?

I'm working on a Toshiba Satellite L505, 2.10ghz Intel Core 2 duo t6500, 4gb DDR3 ram and the Intel Series 4 display adapter/graphics card.

I am an artist and have been doing some digital art that has started to bog my computer into "break it out of anger" slug-pace.

in photoshop cs4, everything runs well for a while but i have a few big working files (357mb) that kill my computer. i can't finish the painting because the lag is too much to overcome.

I started playing with Scultris, a fairly lightweight digital sculpting program. barely into any progress, it becomes unusably bogged down. In processes, it runs less than 100,000k, light by most other program standards. yet it is still maxing out my CPU>

what settings can I change to make it more optimal for what I am doing? Sculptris forum suggested optimizing my graphics card settings but I am not sure how.

Are there other things I can do to increase performance?

Thanks.

oh and here's some info if it helps:
