Is it possible to convert a .wav file to a .mid? I have tried a couple of proggies and get error messages like" unable to convert compressed file" and " only 8 bit" or summat

Well those errors are pretty self explanatory, Ergo if the file is
compressed then you need to un-compress it first before attempting the
conversion.
BTW your flogging a bit of dead horse trying to convert WAVs, MP3s,
whatever to MIDIs.
The two are completely different things. WAVs and MP3s contain an actual
recording of a sound, and MIDI is a musical description protocol, a bit
like sheet music.
Yes there are various programs attempting to do the above, but unless the
recording is of a single instrument, say just a piano(no vocals). The
resulting MIDIs are completely useless.
So you can forget trying to convert that Enimen or whatever WAV to a MIDI.
