Help with old Planar 3 turntable

Hey all;

Just picked up an old cheap Planar 3 with the RB200 tonearm. It works
fine, looks good, etc.; but I'm curious about a lump on the tonearm.
First of all, the arm looks like this:

However, there's a sort of bracket on the arm just about the bend nearest
the headshell. Does anyone know what this is, if it was original, or if
it was added after the fact?
