Pioneer makes good DVD drives - if those will work in your case.

Thanks Rob, I'll take a look at them and see if they'll fit the plan. I appreciate the tip.

They're actually pretty high quality too.

Not a problem.

the pioneer 106S is the top of the slot loaders...
avoid the 105S though. its older and not as good

i love my 106S.

We may be incredibly unlucky, but BOTH my friend and I have Pioneer 106S's that have problems. His makes an aggravating clicking noise, and mine will get stuck in windows explorer when i navigate a cd's filesystem. I'm going to toshiba or lite-on.

I say unlucky too (or a bad batch in your area - damaged or manu). I started with the first Pioneer slotload, have bought some of each model (IDE & SCSI) since and will never go back. A few months ago I upgraded my system and bought a cheap BTC DVD to put in my old system just so I could keep my 106S. The BTC drive failed (gave my old PC to my oldest son) and I had to return it - guess what I bought to replace it? You got it - a Pioneer 106S - the best DVD-ROM drive and slotload to boot.

I thought a thought, but the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I had thought.

The 106S/AO6S/116S are ATA66 drives - You need to use an ATA66/100 cable if you are using it with an ATA66/100/133 controller or you will have problems. Because it is ATA66, however, I have installed mine as master on the same channel as my 16X CD-RW and it does flawless copies without resorting to burnproof - It just keeps ahead of the CD writer at full 16x burn. Most CD/DVD-ROMs can't do that on a single channel.

I thought a thought, but the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I had thought.

allthough my friend used his 116 for a while on an old ata33 cable, and got decent use outta it.

my first slot load was a 32x cdrom. bit loud, but very fun to use.

my ltd-163 has extremely annoying sound interference when i play DVDs (doesn't happen with VCDs), but i haven't come across anyone else who has the same problem.
