Massive Slowdown in DSL speed

Hey guys!!

I was wondering if any of you could help me. When I first got DSL, I was getting transfer speed of 1200kbps(down)/212kbps(up). That was 2 months ago. After I upgraded my comp I get 1108/91. Any ideas on why? Here's my system specs:

Athlon XP 1800@1618mhz
Epox 8KHA+
512Mb PC2100
Alcatel SpeedTouch USB DSL modem

Do i need to Flash the BIOS or get new USB drivers from VIA? I called BellSouth Tech support and they said that my line was perfect. I just don't know what would cause such a dramatic drop in my Upload. Thanks for the help.

There is a lot of variance in speed while on the net.. my speeds range from 2100\370 to 1850\340 all of this is within the normal expectations .. you WILL however get better efficiency and stability and possibly speed if you make the conversion from USB to NIC as suggested above..I highly recommend you do this. You can use several Java based tweak utilities for free at <A HREF="http://www.dslreports.com" target="_new"> This </A> site to maximize your throughput

Well, I called BellSouth and asked them about getting another modem and they want to charge me $160 for a internal NIC. Could you recomend a modem that I could buy online and that would be cheaper?

thanks,
paks

P.S. i found this online: Wildwire ADSL PCI modem, 1.5Mbps
Is that any good or is this the wrong thing?

you don't need an internal dsl modem, you only need one that connect to an ethernet (nic) card which cost 10$+. There is an Alcatel DSL modem which work with ethernet cards, that's the one my dad got instead of the one you use.

Sound like your ISP hire idiots for customer support, pretty common to hire idiots and give them low pay to save money. ;) Don't let the fools tell you all kinds of b.s. and give you prices, if you rent the modem from them then it's the same cost for the usb or non usb modems to rent. They don't even need to change anything internal, like they would have to if you want a nortel dsl modem.

I had a great chit chat with the head tech support of my dad's ISP after getting no sir, and we don't/can't do that sir, from the tech on the phone. To say the least next day at 1:30 pm there was a tech at my dad's door, he checked all the phone lines to make sure it's not the problem. Replaced the modem with another (didn't help), then when all failed he pulled out a non usb version and we installed it with my spare ethernet card (they are so cheap now that they don't even give the ethernet card anymore). My dad now a happy camper downloading at 115-120Kbyte/sec instead his old 30-40Kbyte/sec on a good day.

p.s. I don't live with my parents, they just live 2 blocks from me.

AndrewT for the people.

I'm using the same modem and getting 1560kbps down and 215kbps up, on average ... and I'm also on Fast Access.

Have you upgraded the modem drivers? If not, go <A HREF="http://www.speedtouchdsl.com/support.htm" target="_new">here</A>.

I'd also recommend going to PC Pitstop, and running the <A HREF="http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp" target="_new">Internet Connection Test</A>. Afterwards, you'll be able to install an "<A HREF="http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/autofix.asp?file=IntSpeed.hta" target="_new">Internet Speed AutoFix</A>" that changes your receive buffer size . There are also other <A HREF="http://pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp" target="_new">tests</A> on this page that measure your line latency, (which are determined by your average ping times to seven other websites) so you can choose the best setting for the receive buffer size.

It is best to run these tests when Internet traffic is usually lower ... such as early in the morning, or late at night, vs "Prime Time".

My line latency normally averages 60ms or below, so I have my receive buffer size at 32120, (low latency) which works very well.

I also normally select the USB Universal Host Controller in the Device Manager, go to Properties for the device, click the Advanced Tab, and disable USB Error Detection. The modem functions better with this feature disabled.

This is all I have ever found necessary to change in order to have good download speeds with this modem. Except for, perhaps, disabling the SpeedTouch USB Diagnostics from loading during startup, because it is basically a useless utility, IMO.
