I paid about $700 for mine I got a couple weeks ago. XP 2500+, DFI nForce2 Ultra400 motherboard, GeForce4 Ti4200 video card, Samsung 19" CRT monitor, Antec Sonata quiet desktop case, Samsung DVD/CD-RW combo. Not top of the line, but enough for what I need it for.

When I got this thing in 2000/2001 it cost a good 4 grand. My next upgrade which, God willing will be if I get accepted into MIT, will probably end up costing more than that or the same....what'd u get anyway?

Makes me think, with that kinda vid card...is it possible that MIT has a constant supply of liquid nitrogen? They won't notice if I'm constantly sucking some for a cooling system right?

Athlon 3200, fx 5700 Ultra, 2x Seagate 120g SATA(raid 0), MSI kt6 Delta, 1024 MB 3200, cute looking case, HP dvd rw, Samsung dvd, Coolermaster Jet7 fan, Lgitech media keyboard , Logitech MX700 mouse, Creative Gigaworks S700 speakers. This all cost me £164.56. The price I paid for a Athlon thunderbird 1.4 when they first hit the streets a while ago. The rest of the parts where all freebies as incentives for best salesman, then I just wait for price of newer and better stuff to come down then take em back refund at original price and use cash for upgrades. The comp has been many different machines over the years but that is what it is now. Next upgrade will be When the Athlon 64's hit the price I got my 3200 for. The 3000 is only £2.00 away but I will wait for the 3200 to come down.
Well, it's hardly my fault that everyone chose that morning to throw themselves off buildings! Made the papers, you know. "Lemming Sunday," they called it.
My computer seems to be one constant upgrade, so its hard to decide how much it cost me. In the last 5months I have bought:
2x120g 7200.7s Bday pressie
Globalwin Saf420 PSU £109
Abit AI7 Exmas Pressie
Asetek water cooling kit £217
Chieftec Case £60
P4 2.6c £70 (Ebay)
Getting 9800pro on tues £155
So thats £611 in total which = about 115hours working at waitrose....bugger
Somewhere in the $1,500.00 US range, just for the tower itself, it wasn't all bought at once though, its been a constant upgrade path with my wife inheriting the best of the discards along the way, and selling off her leftovers as we go.

As I sit up in my bed looking at all the stars, I begin to wonder... WHERE THE HECK IS MY ROOF!?
even if its 4k canadian, he got the shafted. seems like he started this thread to brag about how much his computer cost, only to find out he got taken.
those are good monitors tho, you must have a lot of space on a really strong desk. i had to get rid of mine when i moved because of lack of space.
Edited by Boilermaker on 04/11/04 02:17 PM.

I'm still in 11th so application and all starts after september (early action). I basically visited it this vacation and decided I really like it. I think I have a chance to get in, but problem is no one from my school has been accepted in 15 years lol! I guess it's time to break traditions and get really pissed off...

Hehe, good luck with that then. Application forms and essays and interviews and whatnot are a pain. I just went through that this year. I got early admission from the University of Western Ontario already but I don't think I want to go there. I'm waiting for admissions from the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo.

Congrats on ur acceptances, and good luck on the ones to come! I hear it is a real pain but I'll go full out on MIT cause I really want to go there. Met with some of the faculty, checked out what they have there, and it seems like a place where u can push ur mind to the limit enjoyably. What are you looking to major in?

I applied to 3 different programs at 4 different universities: Computer Engineering, Software Engineering and Computer Science. What major are you looking to apply to?
Intelligence is not merely the wealth of knowledge but the sum of perception, wisdom, and knowledge.
Computer science, physics, and mathematics. I get a feeling that computer science is slowly becoming worthless so I don't think it's worth a PhD in. Mathematics on the other hand may allow me a broad range of fields (+ comp sci background) and then physics is for fun and also if I wanna do some mechanical engineering (as low as it does pay, I gotta say I love building crazy stuff with my friends).

Well, it's not becoming worthless, it's just not as big as it was a couple of years ago before the tech bubble burst. Tech careers in general have slowed down a bit. However, computer science is still a big field. It is also still a young field. Specializations such as AI are still in their infancy. MIT's AI Lab is legendary.

You have a point, but for sheer programming, there are too many people it seems. I will go ahead with comp science but will be cautious. Lol, I need to get my head out of the clouds, thinking about all this college stuff is making me forget about school!
