Aureal Vortex 2 + Windows XP problems

Sometimes, when I have some music videos playing, or my mp3 playlist going, the sound will just completely stop. I'll close Winamp or WiMP, then try again, and there won't be any sound. Today, when I was doing this, I had WS_FTP Pro running (to download Mandrake 8.2). But, it wasn't eating up any CPU cycles, really. At least, that's what Task Manager reported.

I've recently done a clean install, trying to get the best method of installing Windows, so it would be the most stable. I installed Windows XP in this order (after installation):
Optimize settings (just swap file, turning off System Restore and Hibernation)
Via 4-in-1 drivers 4.37
Windows Update critical drivers (incl. Vortex 2 drivers from Windows Update)
PCI Latency Patch 0.19
ATI Radeon 6.13.10.6015 video card drivers (I have the 32MB SDR model)

The only way I can hear any audio again is to reboot. So, can I please get some assistance? Thanks!

This is a problem notorious with VIA chipsets and several sound cards, including Aureal Vortex2 and Creative Live cards. XP was supposed to fix problems like this!

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Yes! Check out http://www.vortexofsound.com, your source for all the best information concerning these cards! IMO these are still some of the best sounding cards you can get, but these have always had problems with certain VIA chipests. Several people have been able to find workarounds for your problem, while others have not. Had the company survived, I'm sure they would have found a better solution.

Another site that you might wanna bookmark is Quantex Zone. That has some good information too.

From that site, it's suggested that I try PCI slot 2. 3 or 4 might be okay, but I haven't tried slot 2. So, I'll do that when I get a chance.

I'm gonna stick with this card, because I can't afford a new one, I sold my SB Live, and it definitely sounds good. I so hate Creative for forcing Aureal to go bankrupt...

I'll post back later. Thanks Crash.

I moved the card to PCI slot 2, and it solved the problem. I'm gonna do a clean install and make sure everything's copasetic, but it certainly looks good. I'm not so mad anymore...

Thanks for your help, Crash. Later...

You'll still want to check out Quantex Zone for the application that makes the equalizer available in XP. The hardware equalizer is the crowing glory of this card.
