Upgrading graphics card

will a Nvidia GeForce GT 640 work in my dell studio XPS 8100

It should work fine as long as your power supply is over 300 watts.

It should work fine. Your PSU is 350W and Dell usually doesn't use terrible PSUs, but you may want to check the amps available on the 12V rail. A decent 350W PSU should have at least 25A on the 12V rail(s) which is enough to drive a 95W CPU and a fairly powerful GPU.

However, gt640 is only 5670/6670 ddr5 territory at best. I mean you're looking at BARELY playable in BF3. I'd step up to a 7750 -- the lowest entry-level card I'd recommend-- which is going to be nearly two times as fast. I don't know your budget, but there are three cards on newegg for less than $100 after shipping and before rebates.

i dont think deel psu will even have a power molex for it...when upgrading as dell a gpu/psu is usually hand in hand

Not all cards need pci-x power connectors, just ones that draw more than 75W.

the Nvidia GT 640 does not need a power connector just an available PCIe 3.0 slot.
(I have the 640)

The GT 640 and the 7750 are pretty much the same performance wise. On videocardbenchmark.net the 640 scores around 1300 and the 7750 scores around 1500.

This comparison shows the ddr3 640 vs the Gddr5 7750. There is a 1gb model of the 640 with gddr5 which is probably more comparable to the 7750. For 99, you can get a nice 7770, which is better than both GT 640 and 7750.

A 7770 requires a 6 pin power connector. The 7750 is the best card that doesn't need external power
