I've decided on the NAD 352 amp and Athena AS-f2 speakers. What kind of
decent speaker and interconnect cables should I get? I don't plan on
spending more than $20 on each.

Lamp cord from Home Depot would work just fine. You can but it by
the foot or spring for an entire roll. They have rolls in different
lengths available. The heavy sized speaker wire from Radio Shack
will work, but the Home Depot option will be much cheaper. If you
have money to burn, you can buy Monster Cable the same way, but it
will not improve your sound, it just decreases your cash.

Get some heavy duty lamp cord. Any of the major hardware stores can
supply this at a very reasonable cost. When installing with lamp cord,
take care to have the correct polarity for the speakers, so that they
will not be connected out of phase in relation to each other, and
produce out of phase sound. With some types of lamp cord it is difficult
to easily see the polarization markings on the wire. But, lamp cord will
work very well.

Does the interconnect cables matter much, or can I get the cheap ones at
Wal-Mart?

I'd avoid the ultra-cheap ones, and avoid the ones that do not
have gold ends (they will corrode eventually). Note that quality
of the cable is the factor to look for, not price. I have seen
the price on the exact same cable vary from $2.99 to $29.99.

I wouldn't get too hung up on gold ends. The copper wiring in my house
is about 25 years old, and I haven't noticed any corrosion problems. I
doubt you'll still be listening to the same stereo in 25 years.

Gold ends are pretty but unnecessary. Rotating a phono connector
occasionally will keep it clean.
