DVD to Divx Requirment

ok I have a Pioneer 16X dvd rom, with an Althon XP1800, 512 MB DDR 2700, and Asus A7V333 motherboard. and I am planning to buy a Geforce4 ti4200. I would like to know whether I can ripe DVD to divx with the above system. What kinda software do I need, and do I need additional hardware? Pls assisr, btw, I will be running windows XP Professionla version.. will there be any conflicts? thx in advance

The biggest issue with Windows XP and DivX is encoding the audio to MP3 format. Windows XP is limited to 56bit MP3 recording. You need to install another MP3 codec to get decent encoding - the LAME codec tends to be the best, followed by Radium, IMHO. If you leave the Media Player setting to always auto-download newer codecs, it will continually replace your codec with MS's "better" 56bit version.
