What does the BIOS see the drive as? What jumpers do you have on the drive.

Which version of Windows are you using?

hmmm strange...
traditionally everyone looses a bit of room as drive manufacturers measure megs & gigs as factors of 1000, not 1024.
so a 40gb drive is really 37.25Gb.
so im not too sure why your is being reported as 31Gb...

check the jumpers on the drive, make sure they are set to someone simple like master or slave and NOT something wierd like cable select.

p.s. u SURE its reading total capacity? (dumb question, but it had to be asked)

Oops, sorry about the misread.

Is your drive properly partitioned? All 40GB of it?

when I got the drive I put in the computer ran the win 98 set up it did the format then install that is all I have done with it. I ran Fdisk this morning it said there was one active partition of 3228mb. Another thing I don't know if it is related or not is I have had to re install win 98 a couple of times as the win.com file it says is missing.

You could have the wrong jumper settings on the drive. It has an Alternate Capacity jumper located vertically next to the power connection on the drive. I would make sure that isn't on the drive, because if it is it will limit you to 32GB.

Yeah, you might want to check your partitions...
You can use software like Partition Magic...or fdisk (which comes with Windows)...but sometimes you lose a little bit of HD space.

After a morning of reformating trying this and that now window shows the HDD as just over 37GB which I presume is about the number it should show?
