For about two weeks now, many times when I click a button on the remote,
two "button pushes" get sent. For instance, in the Now Playing list, if
I right arrow on a show, I am quickly taken past the Info page, and it
starts playing. This is getting very annoying.
I think this started happening right after the new software got loaded,
and also after I changed the batteries in the remote, but I don't know
if either had anything to do with it.

I haven't, but I don't know what brand/model TiVo you are using.
Not all TiVos are equal and exhibit the same problems.
Note that a program start from Now Playing list is different when
pressing Select versus Play on a highlighted program name.

There've been a number of complaints about this, about pixellation,
about slow menu response, and other performance issues since the 7.1
update, on the TiVo Community Forums.
Personally, I had some of them -- slow menus and double buttons chief
among them -- until the newest update (the one after 7.1a; it just came
last week), which seemed to clear everything up. Mileage seems to vary
on this, however.

I also get this.
It seems to have started when I changed from 40GB to 260GB.
I notice that it only happens when recording.
both the old disk and the new ones are 3.1.1.e on a Samsung DirecTV unit.

It's a known issue on 7.1, it happens to me too. It became less frequent when
7.1a come around, but it's still not gone.

Tivo is a poorly designed and written product.
These types of issues can be expected to occurr frequently.
Check with your cable company for a better product.

Damn annoying troll.
TiVo is so horribly built that my Sony series 1 is only a mere 5 years
old. I guess I shouldn't hold out much hope for my 2 S2 boxes...
