I am trying to transfer some shows to my laptop. I know the usb ports are
worthless. I have read that you can use the tivo desktop software and a
networked dvr to transfer but how do I network the dvr there is no ethernet
port?

You use a USB Ethernet adapter. They are inexpensive and work well. I was
able to set up my Tivo on a network and download programs to my PC, though I
had no idea what to do. I followed the instructions on Tivo's site and they
let me through it every step of the way. Check their site and follow their
instructions. If you can't find their instructions on their site, reply in
this group and I will send you the direct link.

Go to tivo.com, it will explain about usb-ethernet adapters, and which ones
to get.

Your understanding is wrong then. Thousands of people are using their
USB ports for networking.

You have a critical misunderstanding, and apparently an inability to
follow simple directions ("Go to tivo.com..." ).

So, for you, perhaps they are worthless.

Yes, with the stock software, the USB ports on your DirecTiVo isn't active.

That might've been helpful to mention in your OP.

The ports aren't dead - your TiVo OS just doesn't support them by
default.

You can fix your OS by hacking to get functionality out of the USB
ports.

For anyone lacking the ability to use a search engine, yes, extremely.

used this site and upgraded from 3.1.1e to 4.0.

Worked very well on my philips dsr708.

I would just pay one of your friends to do this/help you with this as it may
appear kinda complicated.

Not for everybody..
