My hard drive won't defrag. There is nothing running in the background that i can see. It just keeps restarting. What should I do?

Sanity was that friend of mine that I accidentally pulled the trigger on

Make sure you press control-alt-del to check that nothing unnecessary is running.
Try it in safe mode if that doesn't work.

I'm guessing that you have Windows 98. This might help: <A HREF="http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q186978" target="_new">"Drive Contents Have Changed: Restarting..."</A>

Make sure to disable virtual ram, Windows is stupid and will write to the swap file and kill your defrag when the defrag program trys to cache a large amount of files.
