Modem configuration

I would like to know how to best configure my 56K external modem. I have a US Robotics V.92 Faxmodem, model 5686D. I know of the following areas (WINXP) where I can change things, but I don't know what to do:

Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click on my Internet connection > Properties > Configure button, Maximum Speed (bps

Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems tab > Properties button > Modem tab, Maximum Port Speed

Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems tab > Properties button > Advanced tab > Change default preferences button, then change available properties

Control Panel > System > Device Manager button, then change available properties for the particular Serial port used
