Where can I find sound analysis software like EASE 3.0 for Windows? I
got to their website, but can find nothing about where to buy it,
whether there are trial versions available for use before buying, or
any other information.

In addition, what software is out there that does something similar to
what EASE does?

The current version appears to EASE 4.1

You can find out more about EASE at

Ease is not an "analysis" tool, it is a modeling and prediciton package.

What, exactly, are you trying to accomplish?

I am trying to design a sound system for a big room without really
knowing much about sound. That's why I though it would be nice to be
able to model the room in a computer simulation and let a computer do
the work for me, like Ease would be able to do. What I really need
some kind of "sound for dummies" reference that would teach me the
basics of sound, help me in knowing what to look for in choosing
equipment, and help me in setting up the system. What suggestions do
you have?

For a beginner in this, the easiest acoustical modelling/simulation
programs are RoomOptimizer (restricted to regular rectangular rooms)
and CARA (more flexible and more useful but with steeper learning/use
curves).

Is there a budget ?

I would suggest if you need to design such a sound system, you should
consider paying somebody who knows. You can write a prize-winning novel
with MS Word, but using Word won't automatically give you a best-seller....

What you need is a consultant
are you financially ready to back up your design?
what if it doesn't meet expectation
what exactly are the expectations
and "sounds good" is not good enough
how will you define when the system is properly tuned

if you don't know much about sound a tool like ease will be worse than
useless to you
it can only supply anticipate measurements, what is the architect
paints the brick walls, or leaves them raw?
what type of carpet is being used
do you know the density of the ceiling tiles or have ready the
dispersion figures for all the speakers that will be bid in as equal to
your spec
in short give the job to someone qualified

Good luck! Acoustical analysis software can help a professional
acoustician (who DOES know much about sound) figure out what's going
on and gives him some insight into the problems he needs to solve. It
doesn't do the job for him.

I'd suggest hiring a consultant to tell you what you need to do, then select
and place speakers according to his recommendations, and do the
construction work yourself such as placing absorbers and diffusors.
That way you'll be able to get involved in the project hands-on and will
start with a good idea of what really needs to be done rather than
simply what's wrong.

When I decided to set up this room, I bought one of those room
analyzers. Can't remember the name of it. But I used one monitor, the
analytical software and an Earthworks M30 mic for the acoustic analysis.

The output was a bit bewildering, but I got a lot of really great help
here when I posted a couple of questions regarding what the software was
saying. It eventually led me to build bass traps and do a bunch of
rearranging.

It's hard to say if the software and Earthworks mic purchase was worth
it. I do think it was a valuable learning experience for an amateur
like me though.

Well, that's what anyone around here would tell you even if they had
never seen any data. <g>

LOL! Yeah, but seeing the resulting graphs change made an impression on
me.

You may vaguely recall me at that time. I was pulling my hair out
trying to get rid of ALL the noise in my system. I believe it was you
who suggested that my only solution would be to fill the room with
liquid Nitrogen!

And how did that work out?

It's a long-term goal Neil. I'm still working on my space suit. :-)
