Hollywood may demand DRM for larger harddrives - analyst

Harddrives using perpendicular recording are on track to hit the market in early 2006 with capacities of up to 160 or even 200 GByte in 2.5" form factors. Consumer electronics using these devices could follow soon thereafter - but Hollywod may have a say in how quickly these monster drives make their way into portable audio and video players, Tom's Hardware Guide has learned. My TiVo plays back previously recorded stuff fine, but yesterday it started
not showing live tv or recording anything new. It's a standalone box, with
signal coming in from a standalone Directv box. Removing Tivo from the
circuit, the Directv signal goes into my tv fine. It doesn't seem to be a
cable/connector issue, since the playback of old recordings is excellent in
all departments. And it's getting a very good signal into the Tivo. Just
nothing live is registering, either in the output or in the record mode.

It's a Tivo Series 2, model number TCD24008A. If I change channels through
Tivo, I get a momentary banner telling me what should be on the new channel,
but no picture. Then it flips to the "Tivo cannot display live tv, try
these tips" blue screen.

Tivo service isn't open till in the morning, and meanwhile TCM is running
hours and hours of Fatty Arbuckle silents starting five hours before Tivo
opens. So any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like your tuner died.

Sounds like a fine reason to buy a brand-new DirecTivo. You'll save on the
per-month costs as well. DirecTV's charge for Tivo is less. And you'll get
the ability to record two shows at once.

But otherwise it sounds like the electronics of your Tivo's tuner have given
up the ghost.

Thanks for the replies to this question. I didn't get it fixed in time for
the recordings I wanted last night, but I did get it fixed. So those of you
who suggested my tuner was gone, don't go junking your boxes too quickly.
When I finally connected with a real person at Tivo, he walked me through
the examination process and found that somehow the Video setting had become
set for RX cable input rather than the composite setting appropriate for the
composite cables I had leading from my satellite box. Changing the Video
setting from RX to composite gave me back my signal and all is well. Don't
know how it happened, since no one has been messing with either cables or
settings to my knowledge, but it's fixed now -- and without throwing it out
for a bad tuner.

I suppose you mean "Coax RF" instead of "RX".

Just for reference, the three types of input for a standalone TiVo are
*) S-Video, L/R Audio
*) Composite Video, L/R Audio
*) Coax RF in, Chan 2, 3, or 4.

You know, I had a moment's hesitation when I wrote that, a feeling something
wasn't quite right. But I trampled right over that hesitation. Never trust
your gut, that's my motto!

I would suggest giving dtivo a good look. Sell your SA tivo on ebay, buy a
dtivo on ebay, or new for relatively cheap. Advantages are:

1) Lower fee - $4.99/month for 1 or all boxes, vs. 12.99 plus 6.99, etc
2) Lower fee
3) Dual tuners - very nice
4) No IR Blasters, better channel changing
5) Optical audio.

I just switched from cable to directv, am selling 2 SA tivos, and have 2
dtivos now set up. A major improvement.
