Hi,

I currently have one ata66 and one ata100 harddrives. I know there is a special cable for ata100, so how can I tell the cable that I have now, can support ata100? Also how do i know whelther my harddsk is running ata100 or ata66?

Thanks!

It should say on the post screen what speed your IDE devices are operating in. And you shouldn't have to worry about compatibility with the cables.

If an orange was driving a racecar would it peel out?

An ATA100 cable is the same as an ATA66 cable. They feel more brittle than ATA33 cables.

There are currently only 2 kinds of ATA/IDE cables. ATA/33 cables have 40 wires. ATA/66/100/133 cables have 80 wires and are usually shorter and less flexible - although they can get as long as 36". The extra 40 wires are for grounding and prevent attenuation. An ATA/66 cable is the same spec as an ATA/100/133 cable.

I thought a thought, but the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I had thought.

Can I use an ATA-100 cable on the IDE-port of my MB?
Or do I need to buy a special controller (eg. Promise Ultra ATA100 TX2 controller)?
If I use a ATA100 HD with a ATA/33 cable, will the difference enorm (or is it even impossible)?

An ATA100 cable is backwards compatible. If you motherboard's connector is ATA33 only, then putting an ATA100 cable there woulnd't help, but it would work anyway. To take advantage of ATA100, you'd need an ATA100 connector on your motherboard or an ATA100 controller.
