My wife's DirecTiVo started freezing up occassionally. I discovered she
had 34 Season Passes. Too many I figure. She is now pruning the list.

34 SPs isn't the issue. Any irregular sounds form the hard drive?

I don't have a DirectTivo, but I know I've exceeded 100 season passes on my
standalone...(I'm currently at 91, deleted a few old shows that have been
cancelled)

The drive is going out, probably. I have 80 season passes.

I think your hard drive is dying, get 'er backed up asap and set up a
new drive using that backup. These things only get worse, not better.

Tell her to delete the "I need a real man for a husband" wishlist.

That should cut down on her recordings altho she'll be doomed
to a life of endless boredom with you.

Get the Hinsdale instructions. They're pretty clear on what to do.

For a TiVo hard drive, you use MFS Tools to create a backup image that
contains the TiVo OS and (optionally) any recordings. You then restore
this image to another drive.

Engage your HD's clutch (and brake if necessary) move the shift lever
all the way to the right and then pull it toward the back - models may
vary, please see the diagram on or near the shift lever or see the users
manual. Smoothly disengage the clutch while starting to accelerate.
You are now backing up your HD.

Thanks for the tip. Works like a charm. One question, though: Is there any
way to disable the white lights on the back of the unit that only turn on
when the shift lever is pulled back?

A Hammer would probably work.

Don't bother. Just make a list of your season passes and wishlists and
replace it. Directv will send you one, but you'll get more capacity if
you just get a new one from best buy... 99 bucks.

Depends on how many episodes each pass represents and the sum total of
items the TiVo is tracking rather than just the Season Pass total?

i.e. One CSI list said 54 upcoming episodes.

P.S. With it now at 22 Season Passes, its working fine.
