I¹m using a Hughes Dircectivo, model gxcebotd. Series 1, I think.

For the past several days, whenever I use it, the picture freezes for a
second or two and the sound goes off. Then the picture starts up and
the audio sounds like it has to catch up to the picture for a
second...like listening to fast forward. There is sometimes pixilation
(?) when it freezes. If I play back the part that just messed up, it
usually plays ok.

I THINK that this is only occurring when I am behind on the show, or
watching a tivo¹ed show. When watching live, I THINK it works ok. (I am
almost always behind when watching).

I have tried rebooting (?) and even leaving the unit unplugged all day,
but it didn¹t make a difference.

Any suggestions?

I am thinking that the hard drive is about to die. IF this is what is
going on, I have access to another hard drive in an identical Hughes
unit - unused. Would I be able to SIMPLY switch them? If so, I would
need detailed (very detailed) directions.

Thanks for any help.

If the other unit's working then all you'd have to do is switch the drives
and the access card. The other drive won't have any of your programs or
season passes but it'll at least let you determine if it's the drive or the
rest of the DirecTivo.

Search for 'hinsdale tivo faq' for some VERY detailed instructions. But if
you want to save where you are now then you'd do well to get a new drive and
copy this current one onto it BEFORE it dies. Drives are cheap and you get
a lot more storage than what was in there originally. Read the hinsdale faq
for the full story.
