Hi,

Does anyone know if the "Advanced Resolution Stereo (96 kHz/24-bit)"
listed on the disc content of a DVD-Audio is something distinct from
the multi-channel content? I am playing "Bach Organ Spectacular" with
Ton Koopman on my Panasonic S97 DVD player (which supports DVD-Audio),
and when I press "AUDIO" on the player's remote a menu comes up on the
TV listing two tracks, 1 and 2. Track 1 has a check mark next to it
and is labelled "PPCM 96kHz 24bit 6ch," and 2 is not checked
(regardless of whether I select it) and has no label. My player says
"D.MIX" on the front panel no matter what I choose, and I can't hear
any difference when I try to switch between the two tracks, so I
suspect what I am hearing is always a downmixed version of the
multi-channel content. Is "Advanced Resolution Stereo" supposed to be
something other than the downmix? How do I select it? I don't want to
miss out!

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Yes, Advanced Resolution Stereo is a 2-channel track. The Advanced
Resolution Surround is the muti-channel version.

That seems like it is the case. I assume you have a 2channel system.

It is something other but is not provided on all DVD-As. In those
cases, the "downmix" facility converts from multichannel to stereo for
you, on the fly.

This has been one of my problems with DVD-A. I want to hear the mix I
hear on the CD (or vinyl) when I listen to the two-track version, and
on at least two DVD-A's I've heard another mix.

I don't care how many kHz sample rate they have - changing the mix is
unacceptable. Its flexibility has been its downfall, at least in my
opinion.

I agree and the problem has faded a bit as more and more of the DVD-As
have a discrete high-res stereo track. The digital versatile disc is
sometimes too versatile for its own good.

Thanks to all for your replies. Based on what you say, it is now clear
to me that the disc box says that Advanced Resolution Stereo content is
present, but the player does not seem to be able to detect it. It is
the new Panasonic DVD-S97 player. I have emailed Panasonic asking
about this. If anybody has any idea how to get the player to recognize
that content, I'd certainly appreciate the info. Thanks again.

OK, here's more. I opened the DVD-Audio (Bach, Ton Koopman) on my
computer and it shows one "group," labelled as Surround. If there is
separate Stereo and Surround content on the same disc, will they show
up as different groups? Thanks.

The fraction of all DVD-As(*) where the two-channel mix is a downmix
is tiny and consists mostly of DVD-As released during the format's
early days. The vast majority of DVD-As provide a
dedicated two-channel mix -- one
that's almost always just a hi-rez remaster of the original mix.

(*let's exclude Silverline releases, please; they tend to be shoddy in
numerous ways, this being one)

So the chances of encountering this 'problem' with DVD-A seems small.
I've only got one that behaves this was (ELP's 'Brain Salad Surgery')
out of more than a dozen I've bought. And that was indeed an early
DVD-A release.

The Koopman disc is one of the minority that
doesn't have a dedicated stereo mix. So the fold-down
of the surround is the only stereo mix you'll be able to hear from that disc.

here's a convenient, and hopefully accurate, list I found on th eWeb
of DVD-As and SACD and how they offer 2-channel mixes.
