I recently purchased a new laptop for additional home computing. My current/old desktop connects to the internet via wired router. To take advantage of the wireless capabilities of the laptop machine, I also purchased an E1200 basis wireless router. I prefer to leave my old wired config in place for my desktop.

So, is is possible for me to simply 'daisy chain' the new wireless router off an external port of the existing router, thereby avoiding the need to load additional software on the desktop machine?

yup, but on the new router you have to be sure you're on a different IP block for your private IP. (If the wired is 192.168.0.x then you have to change the wireless to 192.168.1.x for example).
