Cant get internet access on my att 2wire wired or wireless

I have a dell desktop with win xp i need to activate but cant get online to do so. The dsl and internet lights are on and my nic light is on via the ethernet cable.I went into safe mode to do a ipconfig and i got a internal error request not supported message. I wanted to try configuring the network connection settings but when i clicked on that in control panel when i was in safe mode nothing came up.any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Did you re-install the Dell NIC driver? You can get it from Dell support downloads.

Are you only able to boot up in XP safe mode?
