I am on my in-laws computer right now and I am having a bit of trouble with it. It seems that some times, for no apparent reason, it will not keep menus on the screen. For instance, if you press the start key, the start menu comes up, and then disappears immediately. This problem is not just with menus, but it also prevents us from closing programs (like Word) and even saving documents. When the save window is pulled up, it closes it without even letting us enter anything.

It's like the computer is saying, "Nope . . . nope . . . nope."

It took me a few reboots to get it to stay working long enough for me to type this. The first time I got to the site, as I was typing my user name and password, it kept erasing my name from the window. Argh!

I guess it is more like hitting Esc or something. Anyway, this doesn't happen everytime the computer is turned on, but it did just happen to me 5 reboots in a row. Each time, it ranges from 1 min of working to 5 mins. Right now I have had it on for 20 mins with no probs [fingers crossed].

Thanks for the help.

"Anybody know what this conflict might be?"

Well, no ... not exactly. It could be due to corrupted Windows files, Registry keys, or a third-party program.

But I do have a solution, my friend.

(Sung to the tune of Camptown Races)

FDISK, FORMAT, REINSTALL
Doo, Dar ... Doo, Dar,
FDISK, FORMAT, REINSTALL,
That good 'ole Microsoft Way.

You can make up the rest of the words, yourself!

My brother started singing this around me, and I can't get it out of my head! ARGH!

But ... sometimes this really is the easiest repair with a version of Win9x, especially if the system has been loaded on the drive for a while, and/or has registry corruption of some kind.

If the system isn't backed up, give them a stern lecture, commiserate over the loss of their data, and give a little whistle. It's a haunting melody. LOL!

It could be something as simple as a screwed keyboard, or interference if the kbd/mouse are cordless.

Also seen very similar behaviour on a machine that had two anti-virus apps installed.

Hit ctrl-alt-del, what proceses are running?

Oh I also thought it could possibly be a virus, did a quick search but no results for those symptoms.

(Very limited knowledge of virii here)

I agree. Definately could be a keyboard problem. May even be the keyboard controller itself. I've had my keyboard go wonky on me a couple times... usually unplugging it and making sure it's securely plugged in is enough; sometimes I have to check for a stuck key.

I have trillion installed, and from time to time I get the same prob if I have a irc chat window open through trillion, I simply click this window and the prob goes away, may be something as simple in your case, try disabling all start programs and see if it goes away.

Well, my bro-in-law re-installed WinME and it seems to be running fine. Prior to this, we had switched out the keyboard when the problem first started, which seemed to quell it. After re-installing, he switched back to the old keyboard. So far, so good.

I forwarded the messages to him so he can reference any suggestions as needed. I will post if any symptoms come back.

Thanks all for your help.
