I know that IBM is in a huge lawsuit over their 75 GXP, but i was wondering if the 120 GXP would be a better alternative? I also know that heat buildup is a big problem, so would active cooling help? I'm thinking about getting the 40 GB flavor.. Thanks

The 60GXP was better than the 75 but no one knows how the 120GXP will
hold up. Only time will tell.

My 120 is doing well. I have fairly good case cooling, though.

I had fairly good case cooling with my old 75, and it would go into thermal recal every 15minutes or so as a matter of normalicy. This 120 hasn't gone into recal yet, that I've noticed.

Oh yeah, I forgot to post how mine was holding up...

So far, so good. The only difference is that I mounted my two hard drives (the other is a slower WD600AB) in the 5 1/2" slots, so they're more spaced out. Plus, I got this 80mm fan sitting on the ledge in front of them. I would take a picture, but I don't have a digital cam. But, to the touch, they're not even warm. I'm not happy with my current case, since it's so cramped, so when I switch over to a new one, I won't have that fan there. Then, I'll tell you how they're doing.

Active cooling would definitely help, with any drive drive for that matter. But, the only reason why we have this 120GXP is because it was a replacement from the 75GXP. If we had a choice, at least I would get a Maxtor D740X Quiet Drive model. They're at Newegg for $69, $83, $102, and $123 for the 20, 40, 60, and 80GB HDs respectively.

The diamond max plus may actually be a great drive for me... it is ATA 133 and i was thinking aobut getting the Sotek Sl-75 Drv5 mobo, which is compatible w/ that. Also, it seems to do a pretty good job over at storage review. thanks again

The Diamond Max Plus is only ATA 100, isn't it? That's what it says on the Maxtor page. The one I recommended is ATA 133. But, it's up to you.

I've been running a test of the 80gb version of the IBM 120GXP for the last 44 hours, continuously, with the IBM drive fitness test utility (http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm). There have been 0 soft errors and the log mentions nothing except fully passing the current test and moving on to the next test. The drive is very quiet next to the 4 Seagate scsi 10K drives in my system. Also, the drive is cool to the touch even though it's been spinning and selected for all this time.

No long term judgements here, but so far so good.

BTW...the IBM DFT utility is an excellent little program for testing almost any type of drive connected to almost any type of controller. It also has some great disk wiping features that work well for removing any vestiges of weird stuff in the boot sector (like "Go-Back" or other funky recover utilities, or nasty boot sector viruses that make fdisk hang.)

"What's all this then???"

I checked their site today and I saw the d740X as ultra ATA 133.. are you talking about a different Maxtor drive?
