hey guys, I'm in the market for a new vid card. Im torn between which to get though. I'm thinking of getting a Geforce 3 or 4 with the Ti-200 chip or the ATI radeon 8500 with 128 MBs of RAM. What are the plus and minuses of these cards? why is one better then the other? Which do u think i should get?

P.S. what ever the card it absolutley must have TV out and preferably dual display

I bought the Radeon 8500 because it out-performs the GeForce 3's, and it has now dropped in price. The retail version also comes with the DVI-A to VGA adapter so you can do dual monitors without buying something extra (small bonus, but nice nonetheless).

I would check out the new GeForce 4 Ti 4200 and 4400 cards. They should both outperform a Radeon 8500 and the 4200 is listed for $185 on Pricewatch, so it's not that expensive. The 4400 is around $235.

That's still questionable whether the Ti4200 is faster. All the previews we've been seeing of the Ti4200 in comparison to the R8500 used early drivers for the R8500. The R8500's current drivers are significantly faster. Of course, there is also the possibility that nVidia can still squeeze more performance out of the Ti4200. The Verdict (Ti4200 vs. R8500)? No clear winner. Besides, the maximum Aniso, the R8500 can usually outperform the Ti4600 but then again the GF4Ti rules for FSAA. I could keep going and going...

Well, here's one comparison that's just a few days old that HotHardware.com did. It compares a Ti 4200 reference board to two Radeon 8500 boards.

<A HREF="http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/S&V/8500_le.shtml" target="_new">Ti 4200 vs. Radeon 8500</A>

The Ti 4200 beat the Radeons pretty handily in almost all the tests, except when anisotropic filtering was enabled. In that case, the Radeons won with a big margin. Overall though, it was a pretty impressive performance by the Ti 4200. The article says they used driver version 7.67 - 6.13.10.6037 for the Radeons.
