Hub or network set up

Hello,
After reading the tech reviews on products I have been looking into building my first PC. Although the information is great for a PC I was curious if you can give guidance on equipment and set up for building a network drive. Specifically, I would like to store all media data, and what ever my family is interested in and make it accessable remotely. The ability to listen to music stored on my pc at home from a remte location. Is this possible?

It is, but it's complex to setup for a novice user. The best choice is something called "Cloud Storage". I recommend using Dropbox (dropbox.com) since it is the simplest to use. Windows SkyDrive is another such service.
