I want to know what setup would be faster the new WD100GB JB
versus two Maxtor 40GB ATA133 hard drives running an RAID controller?

The WD "JB" drives are definately FAST, but the Maxtor RAID 0 array would be faster if properly configured. The WD would still be "quicker" - the seek times are lower and it would still have more cache. I made this same decision and went with 2 x 60GB Maxtor ATA133 over 1 x 120GB WD "JB" 8MB cache.

I thought a thought, but the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I had thought.

a few quick question:
can u use two 100 Gig hardrives like the western digital in a stripe array...wouldnt that create a problem because it exceed the 120 Gig barrier...also, do any other companies make a good drive with an 8meg cache.

Thanx

The 137GB (base 10 GBs) barrier is only a ATA100 spec limitation per drive. ATA133 eliminates it.

WD "JB" series are the only ATA100 7200RPM drives with 8MB cache.

I thought a thought, but the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I had thought.

Which I don't think any hard drive mfg. except Maxtor would have that problem.

Yup, I was going to get another 40GB along with my new mobo this summer, but if WD is going to release 8MB cache 80GB hard drives, then I'll get one of those and save up for the other later, maybe in the Fall.

No 120 (137) gig barrier for a RAID array. The limit on ATA100 drives is PER DRIVE. So an array of 4x120 WD 8 meg = 480 is possible on a normal 2 channel raid card.....

Where did you get info about the new 80GB drive and are they going to make a 40GB or 60GB?

Duh, the 80GB was on their site, but anything about a 40GB or 60GB?

Here's the link for it.

Notice the Max possible buffer to disk speed is 77Mbp/s faster than the 100GB & the 120GB.

Woohoo! Getting nearer the idea of 40GB/8MB drives. I wonder what sort of price they'll be selling at?

I would assume it's because there's one less platter, but I'm not an expert on drive mechanics.

Abit has a new KT333 mobo out that sports not 2 but 4 IDE RAID connectors, so you could have 8 1200JB's in raid 0!!!!

too bad they would totally swamp the 133mb/sec bandwidth max.
