Has anyone in this newsgroup done an information TiVo longevity
survey of group readers? Something where everyone appends their
TiVo information onto a list like this:

Months Drive Other
Model in Use Failures Failures
-------------------------- ------ -------- --------
Hughes HDVR-2 DirecTivo 18 0 0

I've had no issues with mine, but I was curious about how long
people's TiVos have been running and what problems they've had.

TiVo TCD240080 28 0 0

I sold the Philips to the sister of a friend when I bought the TiVo
Series2 box. She's still using it with no problems.

Both units were upgraded with Maxtor hard drives. The Philips was
upgraded to an 80G when it was several months old and the TiVo to a 120G
shortly after I bought it.

I don't speak for anybody but myself - that's enough trouble.

Model in Use Failures Failures
-------------------------- ------ -------- --------
HDVR-2 DirecTivo 18 0 0
Philips Series 1 58 1 0

For the record, the series 1 unit's failure was after 18 months, it's been
fine for the following 40 months.

Both units are on UPS so they don't get whacked when the power goes out.

To be fair, I replaced the HDD a couple of years ago to expand
recording time - no telling how much longer the original might have
been good for.
The one failure was actually a manufacturing fault: the battery
retaining clip had separated at one solder joint resulting in the
system loosing the time/date if mains power dropped.

It was a time of great turmoil. The strong preyed on the weak, dogs
and cats lived together. One voice cried out in the wilderness:
