XP Standby Problem

I have a P IV 2Ghz (Will) with windows XP. whenever i choose standby from the shutdown menu it tells me i can't, because the keyboard won't let me, try updating driver. i have updated driver, no effect. if i try the hotkey button on the keyboard that should put the PC in standby, the thing restarts spontaniously and when it comes back tells me that windows has recovered from a serious error and needed to restart to prevent damage to my system! WTF??? I'm getting pi**ed off, i've changed everything i can think of! what could it be?

See if your power management stuff was accidently turned off in BIOS. That's all i can offer ya atm.
