Any reason why two switches connected with a cat5 cable btw a 50m distance why n

I connected two Juniper EX3200 switches using a cat5 cable between a distance of 65meters. I configured the ports on the two switches to be a trunk. This did not work. Why? I then connected the switches with a cat 5 cable between a distance of 3meters and it worked. Why is this so?

If you plan on running at gigabit speeds, make sure the cat6 has all 8 conductors/wires. 10/100baseT only requires 2 pair of wires. Gigabit requires all 4 pairs. Other than that, you should be good up to 100 meters.

It sounds like your cables were missing pairs, or out of tolerance to the switches. If you can, it would be better to use a fibre optic pair and SFP modules for the trunk links.
