Getting Win XP to work

I have a couple copies of XP, but i can't get any to work. I can get one to start, but then when I get to the checking for updates part, it does that for about five minutes and I get tired of waiting. Does anyone know a better forum for this type of stuff?

I've had XP thinking for over an hour before it decided it didn't like my sound card and wasn't gonna continue.

I always find that when I answer yes to checking for updated install files it usually don't work, I just tell it not to look up updated install files and all works our well. you can always do a windows update later.
