Can the video memory be upgraded just like the RAM memory chip or do we have to replace the whole mother board?

On some older video cards (like my ATI Rage II+), you can add more RAM through a riser card or more chips. You can't upgrade to a new type though. Newer video cards (anything after a TNT) don't have this ability, at least not that I've seen.

Do you have something specific in mind or were you just curious?
