Hello guys,

my computer clonked out, while working on it, all of the sudden, I get a BSOD. When I try to restart, it says the boot manager is missing.

I popped out the drive, connected it through a hdd enclosure and got it in my old laptop with win xp through the interface.

thankfully the drive reads, so I want to pull my files out.

now, all my files are in Documents and Settings (downloads, pics, docs, etc)

but when i try to access it, it gives me "access denied".

when I right click and chose properties though I do not even see the security tab.

what can I do?

thanks!

The simplest option is to download and burn a Linux LiveCD, such as Ubuntu, start up the computer from it, and access the files. Linux doesn't give a crap about Windows file permissions, however if the files are encrypted through the filesystem, it will not work.

thanks that's a great idea, I managed to get it going.

any idea what to do wrt to the boot loader? The drive seems to connect fine through the enclosure, and I haven't had any errors copying the files. I do not know why the boot loader would spontaneously delete itself. Any ideas?

I see several options
1. find a way to fix boot loader
2. format entire drive and reinstall (not desired ;)

I've been putting off running checkdisk until i get all my files off (i got about 300gb) since I seem to remember it messing things up occasionally.
