Hello,

I have a IBM Deskstar IC35L040AVER07-0
7200 rpm 41 gig that just stopped working!I can't even get it to show up post bios.

It is my C drive with Win ME and it shows up post bios okay but when it tries to verify DMI pool data I get an I/O error replace disk.

I have connected it to another machine as a slave, but it won't even allow that machine to boot up.

I can hear a soft nnnchhh noise in it too.

I have only had it since December last and it hasn't been touched in the machine. The last boot up that was okay I couldn't get the keyboard to work on the login panel and when I rebooted, this happenened.

Is there anything to try please?

Dave

I don't know which one the aver is, but most likely a 60gxp.

Anyway, swap it out.

Ibm will give you a RMA number over the web, and you'll receive a replacement on your doorstep about 3 weeks after mailing the return.

Since you have a 40 gig, expect back a 40 gig 120gxp.

Other than that, you can 'Nuke the Entire Site from Orbit', and pick up either a Maxtor or Western Digital. Seagate comes close.

Yeah, that's a 60GXP. You need to go to the IBM website, and download Drive Fitness Test. Do a standard scan, and you'll find that it can't complete it. When it gives you the RMA code, go to the IBM support page for returns.

Here's the tech support main page: IBM Hard Disk Drives Technical Support

After you get the replacement, which will probably be a 120GXP, see if you can just sell that new replacement on eBay or something like that. Then, get a Maxtor D740X Quiet Drive instead.

just that i would like to point out is:

since few weeks the ambient temp is rather above 20°C.

i have had a 60gxp heat tip more than 45°C instead of the usual 30°C.
priori, the 60gxp seems to be very sensitive of.

maybe this can explain 60gxp hd damage ??...

Thank you all very much for your time and advice.

I did download the IBM DFT32-V301.exe and with the made floppy ran a test. The SMART part is okay, however it gives a ax70 error on a Quick check. It is the same error when I do the advance and whatever test I could find there!

I have not gone past this yet as I hope I can save my data from the rotten thing.

I have two partitions on it and when I boot to the A drive I can get to the second partition and see all the files in DOS from the prompt but of course the C Drive primary cannot be accessed.

Because I can see the files on the 2nd partition I am hopefull there is something I can do to find the C drive.

I will try the virus also to see if that says anything.

I look forward to your advoces with gratefullness.

My 40GB 60GXP just died, and I'm waiting for the replacement. I think I'll sell it when I get it. I've never had a drive die, especially within 6 months. POS. Really pisses me off to see it happening to lots of people all of the sudden.

Do you find the 60 GXP to be that bad? I bought one in Jan. and I love it. Very fast and quiet. Though after reading through some old posts here I immediately back-uped all my critical data. I knew there were problems with the 75 GXP, but I thought the 60 was doing ok.

For some, it's been bad. I built two computers for two friends with the 60GXP, but they haven't had any problems. Camieabz hasn't had anything go wrong, either. But, I'd get some good cooling if you value your hard drive. If you can, I'd switch to those Maxtor Liquid Bearing hard drives pronto.

Since you can see the files on the second partition from a DOS command prompt after booting with a startup disk, you may be able to transfer them using XCOPY.

Create a new directory on another partition. Let's say it's on the root of (C:), and called Personal Files. Now let's say that the folder you wish to copy is on the (D:) partition of the failing drive, and is called My Music.

CD \person~1
CD D:
CD mymusi~1
XCOPY D: C: /e /c /i /q /h /r /k /y

With (D:) being the root of the partition containing the folder to be copied, and (C:) being the root of the newly created directory.

Note: You may have better luck getting the files off the drive if you put it in a ZIP Lock bag, and put it in a freezer for about 2 to 4 hours before attempting the data transfer. And obviously, this won't work without two hard drives.
