I'm looking to buy a new 40G HDrive.
What is the best choice between Maxtor DX740X and IBM deskstar 120gxp ?
Thank

OK for Maxtor, but is there a difference between the model with fluid bearing and normal bearing (I don't remember the model number)

With all the legal dealings, and the suggested power-on hours, I would go with Maxtor. I have the 120GXP, and I'm scared that something bad might happen. As soon as I get the chance, I'm switching to Maxtor.

<font color=green>My two cents</font color=green>

Don't you just love that nice uneasy feeling IBM has given us.

I would go with maxtor too or WD with or without the large cache. Just no IBM, seen people with too many problems with them.

If this was a year ago, I'd recommend IBM, but now I'd recommend Maxtor.

Those of us that went with the hype of IBM got screwed. My 60GXP just died after only 6 months. Go with Maxtor, or my favorite Western Digital.

May I say it was a most enjoyable one. For many I supplied with drives too. In fact we're getting screwed on a daily basis, and loving it!

Don't you think there's as much hype on the Maxtor drives too? The new WD JB drives also have a lot of hype. No one really knows how long they'll last and what foibles they might have.

Scuse me. I need to get back to my screwing.

I guess you detected the pattern. Fluid bearing makes the drive heads move quieter, at a price. But from what I've heard, there's a really small difference.

On a side note, how come that second page still keeps saying, "<b>Warranty Period To Be Determined</b>"??? That kind of scares me...or should it?

New rule:

Members may only recommend hard drives that they are positive about, preferable own, and have been out for 6 months at least.

I'm waiting until the fall so that I can see what happens to the JB. We're all recommending it, but we know nothing about it really. The only reason I feel good about it is since I've owned a number of Western Digital drives and they've been reliable.

I also wonder why the external maxtor and wd drives only offer a 1 year warrenty when they are the same drives as regular drives.

Maybe because they are enclosed with too little ventilation.

Maybe, but on the THG test of the WD drive, it had the lowest temperature. Don't know how reliable that data is but I guess time will tell how reliable the drives are.

well ive got both maxtor and ibm
40gb 60gxp and a 80gb d740x

both are very nice, and the 120gxp is supposed to be even mor reliable than the 60gxp.
the d740x is fast, but drive noise is much more noticable. higher pitched seek noises.
bit of a tossup really
