Hi Group,
I'm currently writing the article on the unusual using of palm devices -
e.g. like a mirror, a torch, etc ...
Do you have any experience of fun or extravagant (not software-related) Palm
usage? I'll much appreciate your stories, examples, links, photos, etc? You
can post it here or even better e-mail it to me <dennis at utracksys dot
com> .
As the stuff gets completed, I'll try to publish it somewhere. I hope this
will be fun.
TIA
Sincerely yours,
Dennis Crane

With the backlight enabled, my Palm is an excellent localised source of
light. I am sure many people have discovered that use and since it is not
Palm-specific, I don't think it has a place on the Web.
What use can it possibly have that is not software-related? If someone uses
it as a hammer, then that's just being foolish. Yet I'm curious to hear
whether I'm wrong or not...

Thanks, Roy.
Using the PDA as torch is the most common case which was discussed many
times on Palm forums. It was a very popular topic during the NY blackout
last summer.
Using it as hammer is not too practical I guess. But I saw the examples of
using it as a part of small robots. Yes, the case is a software-related, but
agree that this is not usual application for Personal Digital Assistant :-).
I meant such examples mainly.
Nevertheless, if some one has a real story of using his/her Palm as a
hammer - it's also accepted (with photos only :-) ).

Hi Dennis,
I am using Palm since 97 and it is the most usuful tool I have.
For example if I am in a restaurant and a table is not leveled, I use my
palm to fix it.
Then once somebody wanted to rob me. I had to give im my wallet, when he
ran away I throw my palm after him and hit him on the head so hard that
he was knocked out. And the Palm did not had a scratch.
I hope that helps you a bit.

The robber was a lucky guy if you have a Palm device. :-) If you would throw
for instance a Symbol device (with attached printer) you definitely could
kill him.

I'd like to reply to the so called "Palm Dude"!
I am the alleged "robber". I did NOT try robbing him, nor stealing his
wallet, he gave me his wallet to hold, whilst he changed the SD card in his
Handspring Visor Wedge.
As I started to run after the REAL robber, of his Psion organgrinder, he
threw his Visor Wedge at the REAL criminal, but missed. At that point, >I<
tripped over a "sleeping Palmman" in the middle of the road (in this part of
the world they use them to slow motorcyclists.
So There!! :-)

I plan to write it in English.
But, it's not my native language as you can see, so I'll give it to the

Straightedge when drawing stuff. It works, but actually isn't
the greatest...
I've probably used my old Palm Professional as a battery tester.
What other consumer device will tell you the voltage of a pair
of AAA batteries and give a reading that's accurate to 0.01V?
Yes, I could use a digital multimeter, but the Palm even
tests the AAA batteries under load, which is better than just
measuring the voltage without a load.
Metaphorically, a badge to show my status as a true geek. At
least back before they were a mainstream device. A friend of
mine who is a musician and who hangs with a much "cooler" crowd
than me used to give me a hard time constantly about walking
around with a pocket computer everywhere. That is, until he
got one himself and started carrying it with him everywhere he
goes, using it for everything. :-)

Hello Dennis,
Here's another idea I thought of, but not strongly
recommended:
Turn your PDA upside down and use it as an
"coaster" for your cup of coffee or drink on a
computer desk.

Apparently less than 10% of accidents are caused by drivers exceeding the speed

Yes: my boorishness, for which I apologise. I mistook you for someone
who spoke English natively but was too lazy to do it carefully, and I
was obviously wrong.

A lot of multi-family apartment buildings (and I assume hotels)
have a central water heating system and then a recirculation pump
that moves the hot water around the building. Without the
recirculation pump (which is likely electric), you can in theory
get hot water, but it may be QUITE some time before it arrives.
It's essentially the same problem waiting for hot water you have
in a single-family dwelling with its own water heater, only on a
much larger scale.
Of course, this assumes that hot water is even available. If
the power was out all night, it might be all gone.
So in some cases, you can't shower in the dark unless you want
to take an ice cold shower, and that doesn't seem too appealing
to me, personally.
(Having said that, I once took showers in the dark every day
for 3 days when PG&E couldn't be bothered to fix out electricity
sooner than that. It worked out OK because I lived in a house
with a gas water heather that had a pilot light and not an
electric starter. So we had no lights or heat for 3 days,
but we did have hot water.)

Hello Dennis,
Here's another idea I thought of;
maybe marketable as well:
How about displaying a PDA ( anyone: PPC, Palm, Linux, EPOC, etc..)
in a mall or street clothing store front display window in a mannequin hand?
I have never seen this done before;
if so, can someone post a picture / link on the web?
What department / clothing store is doing this "smart" idea :-).

Wouldn't a hollow bogus Palm be sufficient in such a case?

In the cafeteria, the tables all rock. This is most exasperating
especially when the big fat lady puts her elbows on her side of the
table and my Cream of the Unknown soup slops over onto my Mystery Meat
Casserole.
A Tungsten C is just the right size to put under the short leg of the
table to make this nonsense stop. Of course, I have to take off the
Rhino Hide aluminum case to do this.

It's pretty close, if you get the larger paper clip they're pretty darned
good, too.
I do this in full view of my colleagues so they don't touch any of my
devices.

Yes. Sadly, my position has just been made redundant, but nobody wants to
loot my desk for fear of what I may have done with my pens / rulers /
whatever. I might get to keep everything!

I have a Palm program I got on a CD which works as a mirror. It just
blacks out the screen for easier visibility.
I was thinking of a funny use of the Palm today as a social device...
beaming messages to other people. You know, telling your buddy that
his pants are ripped, asking somebody out, silently arguing with an
enemy while on public transportation... you name it.

Why not just switch off your Palm?

That's not extravagant though. Communication is a main use of PDA's.

Hello,
Maybe not extravagant; but how about using
the back of a PDA for support when you want
to write on one of those Post It small color note papers.

Hello All,
Here's another idea from me ;-) :
While you have your Palm device in it cradle;
you can lay on top of it, a 3" X 5" or lesser size
portrait / photo of your love one, family, mom, pet, etc...
Cheers,
Byron Collins
